Windows 7 on netbooks? No problem, says Microsoft.

"Looking forward, we can confidently say that no matter how netbook PC hardware evolves, we're gearing up to ensure that Windows 7 will run great on them," Brandon LeBlanc, a Windows communication manager, wrote in Friday blog post.

"We've been testing Windows 7 on netbook PCs since before Windows 7 was feature complete, and our plan is to enable these small notebook PCs to run any edition of Windows 7," he wrote.

A beta version of Windows 7 was released in January.

Microsoft on Monday will unveil a new version of its software for aggregating health records that makes it easier for patients and doctors to share information electronically.

Microsoft has released an updated application that provides tighter integration between Windows Live services and the company's mobile platform.

Windows Live for Windows Mobile 10 offers a variety of services for Microsoft-powered handsets like the Touch Pro and the Samsung Omnia. On the e-mail side, it provides more robust connectivity with Microsoft's Web-based e-mail by bringing full push and pull capabilities. This means Hotmail users can get their messages on the go quickly and nearly in real time.

Microsoft will make "major new announcements" relating to its forthcoming Windows 7 operating system when it launches the Release Candidate of the OS, according to a British technology news site.

Microsoft Windows OEM manager Laurence Painell told PC Pro that the company plans a "couple of additional, quite major announcements" at the time it releases Windows 7 RC. The Release Candidate will likely ship in May, though Microsoft has yet to formally confirm a date.

One possibility is that Microsoft may announce a release date for the final version of Windows 7 at the same time it ships the Release Candidate.

Microsoft says its Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system is gaining momentum in the United States, and several handset makers are now ready to bring more phones to the market that use the OS. Microsoft expects several phones on the U.S. market to be powered by its Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system after it launches in the fall of 2009, according to a company executive.

"We will have over 10 phones available in the U.S. alone. We expect to see that grow," said Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft's entertainment and devices division said during his keynote speech at the CTIA wireless technology showcase.

Microsoft has decided to give away Office SharePoint Designer 2007 for free in order to get more organizations thinking creatively and building customized applications on the SharePoint platform. SharePoint Designer 2007, which previously cost $299.95, lets companies without coding experience build custom portals, extranets, intranets, Internet-facing sites and collaboration offerings on the SharePoint platform.

SharePoint is a major cash cow for both Microsoft and its channel partners, representing a billion-dollar business with more than 100 million licenses sold to date, said Tom Rizzo, senior director of SharePoint, in a video interview posted recently on Microsoft's Web site.

Always looking for unserved or underserved markets, Microsoft unveiled a Windows Server offering on Wednesday that aims to provide very small businesses with an entry-level server.

Dubbed Windows Server 2008 Foundation, the server offering, which targets small businesses that have 15 or fewer users, will be available through PC OEMs beginning in April, the company said in a statement.

"There are about 33 million small businesses around the world with one to 15 employees and less than 25 PCs," Chris Phillips, general manager of the Windows server solutions group, told InternetNews.com.
