Microsoft this week revealed that it will finally kill off its once-reviled Passport system, which is uses for universal Web logon. Well, they're not really killing it per se, they're just renaming it. In line with its other Windows Live services, Passport will be renamed to Windows Live ID, and will be used to authenticate users on Windows Live, Office Live, Xbox Live, MSN, and other Microsoft services. Passport was first launched way back in 1999 and was originally designed to sit at the middle of a massive suite of services, including the ill-fated "Hailstorm," an attempt by the software giant to bring universal Web logon and other Web services to businesses. But fear not, Microsoft fans, the company hasn't given up: It's developing a technology called InfoCard that, yes, will attempt to provide business users with universal Web logon. They'll get you eventually.

Comments like this really tell the story of why open source is still living in the past.

If MS wanted to make a really good impression, they'd look into using OpenID for this kind of stuff. At the very least, if they should make the API available to languages like PHP, Python, Perl, etc. (they may have already done this: I've never really looked into Passport, I just assumed it's a .NET thing).

The name 'passport' struck me as a rip off of a Mac program for such a function, now we have the typical Microsoft Too-Many-Words-to-Describe-Something-That-Could-Have-Been-Done-With-One, name.

I think a far better option is the PasswordMaker plugin for FireFox. It really is "one password to rule them all." I have only one password to remember, and it mathematically generates unique passwords for every website I use. It will even auto-fill in username and passwords on designated sites if I so desire [a nice feature when dealing with low-security risk sites].

To each his own I'd say. And no, I'm not die hard MS. I have and still use FC, FreeBSD and WinXP. So we all might as well accept that they would and should exist in harmony rather than naive comments of this or that wins. Like open source? Use it. Don't? Don't use it. Personally since MS is just renaming passport I don't see the point of saying down with the evil empire.

What a shitty article. I thought people cared about stuff that matters. We all know that microspft is a greedy money loving company otherwise it would have been eaten by now. Who gives a flying goats nad about what a service is called. I could call it Horatio Menalto for all I care. The people over at microspft do not hink about you or desing or ease of use because they only care about leather and folding it to make wallets. What a bunch of fuching pricks that run this webpage those fuchs.
